Travel Information

Planning your journey to the Mounts Bay area should feel just as relaxing as the holiday itself. Whether you’re arriving by car, train or taxi, or bringing your four-legged friend along for the adventure, here’s everything you need to know before you set off.

Travelling by Car – Easy access to Cornwall’s coastline

Most of our guests choose to drive to Mounts Bay, giving you the freedom to explore Cornwall’s hidden coves, seaside villages and dramatic coastal paths at your own pace.

  • Main routes: From the M5 at Exeter, follow the A30 all the way into West Cornwall. The road is mostly dual carriageway and well-signposted for Penzance, Helston, Marazion and The Lizard.
  • Arrival times: Roads into Cornwall can be busy during school holidays and peak weekends. If possible, aim for early morning or later evening arrivals to avoid congestion.
  • Parking: Most of our holiday cottages include dedicated parking or nearby public parking. You’ll find full details in your arrival information.
  • EV charging: West Cornwall is increasingly EV-friendly, with rapid chargers available in Porthleven, Penzance, Helston and Marazion.

Travelling by Train – A scenic and stress-free option

Cornwall’s rail network offers a wonderfully relaxing way to arrive. Sit back, enjoy the views, and let someone else do the driving.

  • Nearest mainline stations:
    • Penzance – the end of the Great Western Railway line from London Paddington.
    • St Erth – ideal for connections into West Cornwall.
  • Direct services: Regular trains run from London, Reading, Exeter and Bristol.
  • From the station: Taxis are readily available at Penzance station, and local bus services operate to destinations across Mounts Bay including Porthleven, Marazion, Penzance centre, Newlyn and Mousehole.
  • Luggage: Most services offer generous luggage space — perfect if you’re bringing beach gear or walking kit.

There is a very scenic train ride between St Erth and St Ives which you may wish to consider if you plan to visit St Ives (particularly because St Ives has limited public parking and in peak season it can be very difficult to park).  The train ride takes approximately 13-14 minutes and passes along the coastline.

Travelling by Taxi – Door-to-door convenience

If you prefer a simple, door-to-door journey from your arrival point, taxis are widely available throughout West Cornwall.

  • From train stations: Penzance has a large taxi rank directly outside the station. Advance booking is recommended during peak season.
  • Local taxi companies: Your pre-arrival email includes recommended local taxi numbers serving Porthleven, Helston, Marazion and the surrounding area.
  • Airport transfers: Taxis and private hire cars are available from Newquay Airport to Mounts Bay (approximately 1 hour 10 minutes).

Travelling with Dogs – Easy, comfortable journeys for four-legged explorers

We love welcoming dogs to Mounts Bay, and the area is well-set-up for travelling with pets.

  • By car: Bring plenty of water, treats and a blanket to keep your dog comfortable, especially during warm weather. Cornwall has several dog-friendly service stations along the A30 for breaks.
  • By train: Many train operators allow dogs to travel free of charge. We recommend checking specific policies before you travel and bringing a lead, water bowl and any comforts your dog enjoys.
  • Taxis: Some local taxi companies accept dogs, but it’s best to confirm when booking.
  • Once you’re here: Mounts Bay is full of dog-friendly beaches (seasonal restrictions apply), coastal walks and welcoming cafés. Your welcome guide includes local dog-friendly recommendations near your cottage.
