4 dog friendly walks near Porthleven

From October to April, Cornwall is a dog owner’s paradise. With empty beaches and woodland walks that welcome dog walkers, Winter is the perfect time come on holiday with your pet.

1. Porthleven Beach via the Penrose Estate

Porthleven Beach is a favourite with dog walkers outside the peak season, with dogs welcome from Easter to 1st October. Just a short stroll from the harbour, follow the South West Coast Path along Looe Bar Road to enjoy sweeping sea views. At Loe Bar, turn left into the beautiful Penrose Estate, where woodland paths, lakeside views and peaceful trails await. Stop for a tasty treat at The Stables Café, then either return the same way or complete the circular route back into Porthleven village. It’s a wonderful mix of coastal and woodland walking.

2. Praa Sands and Hendra Beach

The Good Beach Guide-recommended Praa Sands is a long, sandy stretch perfect for dogs to enjoy from October to Easter. Park in the main Praa Sands car park and head straight onto the beach for a refreshing shoreline walk. At the far left (when facing the sea) you’ll find Hendra Beach, a quieter spot with plenty of space for a good run.

After your walk, warm up in the dog-friendly Sand Bar and enjoy lunch with panoramic beach views.

3. Poldhu Cove and Church Cove, Mullion

Close to Mullion, Poldhu Cove is a gorgeous sandy beach that welcomes dogs all year round. Explore the shoreline before following the path up the hill to the upper car park, where you’ll be rewarded with dramatic cliffs and sweeping views across to Church Cove.

After your coastal adventure, head to the nearby Halzephron Inn—a multi-award-winning, exceptionally dog-friendly pub serving fantastic food in a cosy setting.

4. Trebah Garden, near Falmouth

For a memorable day out, head a little further towards Falmouth to explore the stunning Trebah Garden. This world-class sub-tropical garden sits in a sheltered valley leading down to its own private beach on the Helford River. Dogs are welcome throughout the gardens, and you’ll find special ‘doggie tables’ in the Planters Café so everyone can enjoy a relaxed bite to eat. With exotic planting, dramatic scenery and peaceful pathways, Trebah makes a wonderful dog-friendly outing.
